Concrete Paths in Pakenham
A concrete path is the smallest slab we pour and often the one that decides how the rest of the yard drains. Wider than a footpath, thinner than a concrete driveway, load-rated for people rather than cars — but graded, jointed and finished to the same standard, because a path that ponds water or lifts against the house fails the same way a bigger slab does.

What we build
The paths people usually ask us for:
- House perimeter and side paths — the strip from the front boundary down the side of the house to the backyard. The most common job, and the one that most often solves an existing drainage problem when it’s built correctly.
- Access paths — from the driveway to the front door, or from the rear slider to a shed or clothesline. Wider (900–1200 mm), often stepped where the site has fall.
- Alfresco surrounds and cross-overs — the concrete apron around an outdoor slab, tying it into the surrounding levels.
- Pool surrounds — non-slip finish, coved edges, and falls set away from the pool coping. Different specification to a driveway; different again to a shed slab.
- Ramps and disability access paths — graded to 1:14 maximum for compliance, with a non-slip finish and edge detail suitable for wheelchair use.

Fall, drainage and where the water goes
The single reason path work goes bad in the corridor: water sits on it.
Standard fall on a concrete path is 1 in 100 minimum, 1 in 80 preferred — enough to drain, subtle enough to walk. Cross-fall is set away from the building, always. A path graded toward the house pushes water at the footing, and on a reactive site that footing moves.
Falls have to end somewhere legal. Your legal point of discharge is the location your stormwater is permitted to leave the site — shown on your title plan or your building drainage design, and it’s not the same as “wherever the grass starts.” On most new-estate blocks in Pakenham and Officer, the point of discharge is a pit at the street kerb; on older blocks in Beaconsfield or Berwick it can be a soakwell, a table drain or the neighbouring easement.
We check the discharge point before quoting, because on some jobs the path is genuinely the drainage solution — falls set correctly to a spoon drain that runs to a pit — and on others the path has to be paired with an ag line or grated drain to work at all. That’s a real difference in scope, and it’s worth knowing before a number is signed off.
Transitions: where paths actually crack
New paths rarely fail in the middle of the slab. They fail where they meet something else — the house, an old path, the driveway, a step, a fence footing.
Two rules do most of the work here.
First, isolation joints. Every fixed structure gets a 10 mm expansion joint between the path and it — house wall, garage slab, existing driveway, boundary retaining. The joint absorbs thermal movement so the path doesn’t push a corner off whatever it’s next to.
Second, dowel connections where a new path is poured against an existing slab. Not butted, not glued — 12 mm dowels drilled into the old slab, epoxied, half-length exposed into the new pour, so the two slabs move together vertically but independently horizontally. Otherwise the join opens, water gets in, and the new edge chips.

The build, in order
How we actually build a path:
Set-out
String lines from the boundary or from the existing structure. Fall and cross-fall marked on pegs at each end. On a curved path, the arc is set out from a fixed centre point rather than eyeballed — curves that meander in the finish look cheap forever.
Excavation and base
Topsoil stripped to firm ground. Base is 50 mm of 20 mm class 3 crushed rock, mechanically compacted. Less than a driveway because the load is less, but the compaction still matters — a path settled at the joints is a path that ponds water.
Formwork
Timber form boards braced to the pegs, with fall built into the box, not corrected in the pour. Where the path curves, the boards are kerfed to bend without waves.
Reinforcement
SL62 mesh on bar chairs for standard 100 mm domestic paths, with 40 mm cover top and bottom. Bar and ligatures at the steps and where the path forms a step-down. Mesh laps two full squares tied.
A path without reinforcement is a path with cracks waiting to open. Reinforcement isn’t optional here just because the slab is thinner.
Concrete and finish
Standard mix is 25 MPa (N25). Placed, screeded to the fall, bull-floated, then finished. Finish depends on the job:
- Light broom — the standard. Classified to AS 4586 for slip resistance and best for external paths that get wet.
- Steel trowel — smoother, for covered paths and alfresco surrounds that stay dry.
- Exposed aggregate or decorative finish — matched to the driveway. See decorative concrete for the options that work on a path this thin.
Joints
Saw-cut control joints at 1.5 m centres on a 100 mm path, deep enough to control the crack — a quarter of the slab depth. Isolation joints against every fixed structure. Cut on time, not the next day.
Where paths in the corridor actually go wrong
Three specific problems we see repeatedly on established estate blocks:
The bagged side path. Original build spec called for a concrete side path on both sides of the house. Only one side was poured; the other is 900 mm of gravel or compacted clay that erodes into the neighbour’s yard. Fixing it isn’t a straight pour — the ground has to be re-cut, the fall re-set to the discharge point, and often a spoon drain added because the gap has been holding water for years.
The path that meets the driveway wrong. Path poured against the driveway with no dowel, no isolation joint, and a 15 mm level difference where it meets. Two summers later, the join is open, the driveway edge is chipped, and water is tracking down the join into the sub-base. The fix is cutting the transition back and re-pouring with proper detail.
The reverse-fall pool surround. Pool surround poured level or falling toward the pool, water sitting against the coping, salts leaching. Re-cutting is a real job; getting the fall right the first time is 40% of a competent pool-surround quote.
None of these are cosmetic problems. Each is what happens when a path is priced as a paving job instead of as a small slab with drainage requirements.
Where we work
Paths on new-estate blocks in Pakenham and Officer are a specific job — small footprint, tight access, drainage tied to a Council pit at the street. A concreter in Officer spends most of the year building these.
Paths on established lots in Beaconsfield and Berwick are a different job — older discharge arrangements, more likely to interact with existing surfaces, and often the drainage solution for a block that pre-dates modern stormwater design. A concreter in Berwick deals with those constantly.
